Lately, Sen. John McCain has been both a thorn in the side of the Trump administration, while selfishly trying to stay relevant as his career seems to be diminishing. The “maverick” nickname he acquired decades ago isn’t fooling any of his constituents anymore.
McCain had intended to shame Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for diminishing our overseas allies, but Tillerson backhanded him into his place when he responded that America’s values are freedom of expression – and the implied lack of diplomacy that McCain insinuated – is not what America stands for any longer.
But, again, McCain is still trying to stay relevant because he just spewed more ignorance about President Trump and his administration.
The Washington Times reports:
“Sen. John McCain said Sunday he is “speechless” over President Trump’s recent decision to allow top Russian officials into the Oval Office and is struggling to explain many of the commander in chief’s actions.
Appearing on ‘Fox News Sunday,’ the Arizona Republican and frequent critic of the administration said he’s perplexed by Mr. Trump’s decision to fire FBI director James Comey and by the approach the White House has taken to questions about its involvement with Russia.
‘Honestly, I cannot explain a lot of the president’s actions,’ Mr. McCain said. ‘Mr. Comey was highly respected and highly regarded, so I can’t explain it. I don’t think it was a smart thing to do.’
Mr. McCain has been highly critical of Mr. Trump’s Oval Office meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak.
During that meeting, the president reportedly discussed classified information with the officials, called Mr. Comey a ‘nut job’ and said firing him had taken pressure off of his administration.
‘I’m almost speechless because I don’t know why someone would say something like that,” Mr. McCain said. ‘But I know this: Mr. Lavrov is the stooge of a thug and a murderer … He had no business in the Oval Office.’
President Trump has vehemently denied those accusations about what he said inside the Oval Office about James Comey. After all, The Washington Post and The New York Times reported that story and everyone knows about the liberal agenda they’re trying to perpetuate to their readers.
But the more important question is, if John McCain actually thinks that Lavrov is a “thug and a murderer”, then where is this proof?
Why doesn’t Sen. McCain show us the evidence of how he arrived at that conclusion?
But McCain also said something similar about Vladimir Putin when Fox News interviewed him before the Army vs. Navy football game in December 2016. And this was at a game that then-President elect Donald Trump also attended.
When asked about Rex Tillerson’s alleged ties to Russia and Putin when he was being considered for Secretary of State, McCain told Fox News:
“Uhhh… I’d have to examine it. I’d like to give the President [elect] of the United States the benefit of the doubt because the people have spoken.
But Vladimir Putin is a thug, a bully and a murderer, and anybody who describes him as anything else is lying.
So we cannot have an accommodation with the Russians until they understand what Ronald Reagan taught them and that is peace through strength.
And right now, we have no peace and we have no strength.”
But doesn’t this seem like more of an indictment of then-President Obama rather than criticizing ties which have obviously progressed since Trump began his term?
President Trump knows what he’s doing, so McCain should just go sit in the corner before he destroys his reputation completely.
