First and foremost I am not condoning the action taken by S/Sgt Robert Bales{Not within the rules of engagement)...however let's examine the facts before we jump to conclusions...The media is not reporting the ages on the so called 'Children' were they toddlers or teenager's capable of fighting with the Taliban...what did S/Sgt Bales know about the family he 'targeted'...were they Taliban fighters connected to placing IED's and attacks on the US Military?
As it appears from the surface... as information is released about S/Sgt Bales...he appears to have just 'snapped' under duress from multiple deployments...for those who never fought in combat and were never subjected/ required to kill the enemy...you will never know what goes through a soldiers mind to alienate oneself in order to pull a trigger and take a life...it can become a blurred line between right and wrong!
During the Vietnam era women and children were used in suicide attacks on US Bases...Women &Children were strapped with grenades and sent to the line smiling and waving...if allowed into the perimeter they would detonate the grenades...soldiers had to learn the hard lesson of having to take them out before they breached the perimeter...I am pretty sure this is going on in the ME war zones of today
During the Vietnam era only one deployment (13 months)was required during service some chose to deploy for more 'In Country' assignments! The reason being is that combat assignments takes a toll on ones mind...some can adjust..others cannot...so only one deployment was required...maybe we should return to this policy!
Let's wait and see... what a hopefully fair and just investigation of all the facts shows... before we pass judgement on S/Sgt Bales!
