oped: This appears to be a classic example of Suicide by Police In my personal opinion having spent over 16 years in LE both local and federal...the first two shots fired were justified the final two not so much excessive force imo! https://youtu.be/ZyNcdxJIPC8
Police shoot unarmed Dylan Noble to death. Warning: Violent content.
New video footage released Wednesday shows the final moments of a deadly
confrontation between police and a 19-year-old, unarmed Fresno man on
June 25.
Police Chief Jerry Dyer said officers believed Dylan
Noble was about to shoot them during the encounter, learning only after
the fatal shots were fired that Noble was not armed, The Fresno Bee
reported.
The Bee obtained the new video on Wednesday. It was shot by a witness from a distance of about 100 feet.
The
26 seconds of footage began with an officer commanding Noble, who
already was on the ground beside his truck and injured by two previous
gunshots, to “Get your hands up!” It’s unclear how Noble reacted, but
police fired a third shot at him soon after making the demand. Officers
continued giving orders for several more seconds before firing a fourth
and final shot at Noble. Throughout the encounter, the trio of officers
stood just a few feet from Noble.
Two officers fired the shots
that hit Noble, Dyer told the Bee, and both were long-serving veterans
of the force. Dyer said the officers were wearing body cameras that give
a clearer picture of the entirety of the incident and he planned to
release that footage once the investigation into the shooting was
complete.
“I anticipate the criminal investigation will be
completed by the end of August as there is a need to wait for all of the
physical evidence to be analyzed either by the Department of Justice
and/or the Coroner’s Office,” Dyer said.
Noble’s parents have
asked for an outside organization to investigate. Dyer told The Bee he
was open to an external review, however, one has not yet been initiated.
Officers initially stopped Dyer on June 25 while looking into a report
of a man dressed in camouflage walking with a rifle. Dyer said Noble did
not comply with officers’ orders and the police believed Noble was
armed. At one point, Dyer said, Noble approached the officers “very
rapidly” and placed his right hand behind his back, making the comment
“I hate my (expletive) life.”
That’s when police fired on Noble, who had no criminal history.
“There was no firearm on this individual,” Dyer told The Bee. “There was no firearm found in the pickup.”
