An Iraqi man was taken into custody in Denton County, Texas, on Wednesday after creating a disturbance and threatening multiple people.
According to employees of the IHOP on the University of North Texas campus, Peshwaz Waise, 28, entered the restaurant at 6 a.m., apparently wearing a turban and carrying a Koran. He proceeded to vigorously promote its message to customers.
One customer was wearing Trump gear, which seems to have set Waise off.
“So, I guess he approached the guy with the same message but the guy had on a Trump supporter shirt on,” said restaurant employee Darel Walker. “So I guess that [was] where the issue arose.”
The situation escalated to the point that someone called 911. “Since the guy, the Trump supporter, was sitting down, a paying customer, the dude was asked to leave,” Walker said. “And I heard it carried on into the parking lot.”
Police gave Waise a ticket for trespassing, but the matter didn’t end there.
A short time later, around 8 a.m. Wednesday, police received a “suspicious person” call near Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in the 200 block of North Bonnie Brae Street. Waise entered the Women’s Center at the hospital and made a terroristic threat, police said.
“He went inside and began insisting they take the [Quran] from him,” read a press release from Denton Police. “He told them to give the Quran to the chaplain ‘or die.'” An arrest warrant affidavit said Waise also claimed the hospital would “go down.”
Waise then drove to the Denton County Courthouse just over three miles away and walked through security. Police obtained an arrest warrant for making terroristic threats and took Waise to jail.
“We were told that there had been threats made by this individual to judges and lawyers and that when he walked into the courthouse and they were screaming Arabic and had a turban and was trying to show people copies of the Koran,” said attorney Pete Schulte.
