They say that music is food for the soul. In the case of former Marine Sal Gonzales, it was his tool for recovery. Gonzales not only works for the Wounded Warrior Project, he is a wounded warrior. He lost part of his leg in a bomb attack2 months into his tour in Iraq as a machine gunner. He now wears a prosthetic leg uses his story as a way to inspire others. (Watch Video Below)
Gonzales recently told his story when appearing on the hit show America’s Got Talent. Before singing a beautiful rendition of Bill Wither’s “Ain’t No Sunshine,” he shared the secret to his recovery and positive outlook on life. He said, “Music was a tool for my recovery. I was able to put down and let go of a lot of pain. It kept me alive. It is who I am.” He added, “I want to show other Warriors that it is possible to follow your dreams and be normal.”
So many beautiful moments occurred during Sal Gonzales’ appearance on America’s Got Talent. Not only did his strong and soulful voice bring chills to many, including this writer, but the audience’s reaction and demonstration of respect with multiple standing ovations refreshing.
