Israel approves Egyptian offensive in Sinai

Sinai-peninsula-map
As reported, under the Muslim Brotherhood’s rule Islamist terrorist groups were allowed to set up in the Sinai Peninsula. As the Muslim Brotherhood was being deposed they gave the green light to and joined these groups in inciting violence. Now, the Egyptian military is planning a major offensive in the Sinai to root out the terrorists and restore the peace. This comes after after violence in the Peninsula threatens the safety of the Suez Canal and amid the possibility that the Sinai could become a new Islamist state under the control of the Muslim Brotherhood.

In order to enter the Sinai in force, they needed the permission of the Israeli government due to the 1979 peace treaty. According to Debka they now have that permission for better or worse. While it is critical that the Egyptian military control the Sinai, I’m sure that the Muslim Brotherhood will use the Israeli permission to try and show that the military is cooperating with Israel. This may lead to more violence as the Islamists get stirred up to attack the new government on the basis that it is a “Zionist entity.” On the other hand, this could lead the new government to push an anti-Israel policy to prove that it is not aligned with the Jewish state. The Sinai has to be cleared and permission had to be given, but the results are still not likely to be good.
