Last week, the Supreme Court caused nationwide debate when they determined that same-sex marriage is a Constitutional right and is therefore legal throughout the United States.
Liberals, of course, broke out in celebration. However some
conservative states are pushing back against the measure. According to
reports, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has determined that country
clerks are able to refuse to perform same-sex ceremonies if it violates
their religious beliefs.
While this defies the Supreme Court’s
ruling, it protects the rights of Christians. Paxton claims that
“numerous lawyers stand ready to assist clerks defending their religious
beliefs” should anyone face any trouble.
Paxton criticized the court’s ruling as well, stating that the United States Supreme Court “again ignored the text and spirit of the Constitution to manufacture a right that simply does not exist.”
“In so doing, the court weakened itself and weakened the rule of law, but did nothing to weaken our resolve to protect religious liberty and return to democratic self-government in the face of judicial activists attempting to tell us how to live,” Paxton stated. “The reach of the court’s opinion stops at the door of the First Amendment and our laws protecting religious liberty.”
