Mark Glaze has been a very prominent advocate for gun-grabbing legislation since he became the executive director for the Michael Bloomberg-backed group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, more than three years ago. Despite – or perhaps because of – his deep involvement in the gun control movement, however, he recently made a shocking announcement regarding the efficacy of his previous activism.
After leaving the organization Friday, he told a Wall Street Journal reporter that many of the murderous gun rampages in America’s recent past would not have been prevented through stricter gun laws. He also pointed to a scandal-plagued Obama administration as a further impediment to the cause.
Glaze suggested that pro-gun advocates are more likely to be wary of the government, adding that those who want more regulation are “forced to take on by proxy a much bigger issue in this country, which is a deeply ingrained distrust of government that gets worse every time the government can’t get a healthcare website off the ground or can’t get its act together to pass a farm bill.”
He also cited the reaction to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s revelations as a roadblock in the path toward gun control.
“The fact that people have learned that the government has taken for itself the right to listen in on our most private conversations has done nothing to inspire faith in government restraint,” he said. “It’s that lack of faith in government restraint that makes it difficult to do things like ask everybody to take a background check.”
While he acknowledged the headway gun control proponents made after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Glaze complained that groups like Mayors Against Illegal Guns – and the associated group Everytown for Gun Safety – cannot compete with the influence of the National Rifle Association.
Glaze is not the first supporter to cut ties with Bloomberg’s activist group. John Tkazyik, who joined the organization as mayor of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., publicly distanced himself earlier this year.
He said at the time that almost 50 other mayors had previously left the organization, explaining the stated mission of reducing gun crimes was in reality just a misdirection as activists pursue the true goal “to promote confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens.”
