A Coptic priest was shot and killed yesterday afternoon in the Egyptian city of El Arish in the Sinai.
The likely attackers were from a Muslim sect which supports the recently deposed president, Mohammed Morsi.
Islamist insurgents also carried out several other attacks on military checkpoints in the Rafah area, as well as in al-Kharouba and Sheikh Zuwaid. These demonstrations of Islamist unrest follow on the killing of five police officers in El Arish last Friday.
The main focus of the anger of the mob was directed against the nine
million members of Egypt’s Coptic Christian community. They were
disturbed by the remarks of Coptic Pope Tawadros in which he publicly
supported the removal of Morsi.
They also don’t like the fact that the Coptic Pope attended the announcement by the military leaders of the suspension of the constitution, and the appointment of an interim president.
Of course, this is not the first time that Coptic Christians have been attacked and killed by Muslims in Egypt. Given the historical tensions between these two communities, it will not be the last.
But this is not a case of Muslims only attacking Christians; The various Muslim factions are attacking each other. Morsi supporters fought a pitched battle with his opponents for control of the iconic Tahir square.
Mohammed Badie, leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, addressed a large rally in Cairo on Friday, in which he demanded that Morsi be returned to power. He especially mentioned the role of the Copts, who he partially blamed for Morsi’s downfall.
He also called on the army to rebel against their generals.Subsequently he, and most of the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, were arrested. Their exact whereabouts, and their fate, are not known at this time.
