Michelle Obama under fire for using military as props in Oscar appearance

Michelle Obama at Oscars

First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance Sunday night at the Oscars, announcing the award for best picture from the White House. But many took exception to her use of military personnel in dress uniforms during her cameo appearance, Twitchy reported Monday.
Commentator John Podhoretz wondered if the military personnel were her "Praetorian guard" in a tweet.
"Should our troops be used as Michelle's Oscar props?" asked talk show host Laura Ingraham.
Another person asked how much taxpayer money was spent on her dress.
The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin wondered why Obama was even involved with the Oscars and took her to task for omitting the military in her statement.
"Alas, none of the films nor her aides reminded her to mention the military, not those personnel behind her nor those serving overseas, an odd omission for the White House that nevertheless was pleased to have them arrayed behind her like, well, set decoration," she wrote.

Obama did manage to include a mention of gay rights in her speech, however.
"These nine movies took us back in time and all around the world," she said. "They made us laugh, they made us weep, and they made us grip our arm rests just a little tighter. They taught us that love can endure against all odds, and transform our lives in the most surprising ways. And they reminded us that we can overcome any obstacle if we dig deep enough and fight hard enough and find the courage to believe in ourselves. These lessons apply to all of us no matter who we are, or what we look like, or who we love…“
"Real heroes, such as our servicemen and servicewomen, inspire us, too, I would think," Rubin added.
Nikki Finke, who "live-snarked" the Oscars at Deadline Hollywood, said it was "unnecessary and inappropriate to inject so much politics into the Oscars yet again."
"Hollywood will get pilloried by conservative pundits for arranging this payoff for all the campaign donations it gave the President’s reelection campaign. I don’t understand this very obvious attempt to infuriate right-leaning audiences. Clearly the studios only want to sell their movies to only half of America," she added.
"Our men and women in uniform deserve unending gratitude," the Twitchy staff wrote, "not to be used as props for someone else’s gain."
