The chairman of the House Benghazi committee on Thursday made a surprising accusation — the Pentagon has made key witnesses in the 2012 Benghazi terror attack investigation vanish.
The hiding of witness from the night of the deadly 2012 attacks in Libya is threatening the more than two-year-old investigation — and may be part of a backroom deal to protect former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said in a statement that the Defense Department spent five weeks completely ignoring a request for the pilots who sent drones over Benghazi and Tripoli.
When the list was finally provided, the Pentagon reportedly had left off key names.
“The committee needs all of the names so the relevant witnesses can be interviewed and the investigation completed,” Gowdy said. “Surely (the Defense Department) can complete the simple task of finding the people within the chain of command in less than three months.”
Unless, of course, they’re trying to keep those witnesses hidden.
“There are witnesses we had to insist on and then we were told no, then we were told we can’t find them, and then we were told, ‘It would take X,Y, Z and you don’t want to do all that,’ and there were all these excuses,” Gowdy told POLITICO in a seperate interview.
“I wanted to have this done in December 2015… But you have to have access to documents and witnesses — that is the lifeblood of an investigation… And when one side controls documents and the witnesses and the other group is trying to conduct the investigation, that creates something of a quandary,” Gowdy said.
This isn’t the first time the Obama administration has been accused of covering up the truth about Benghazi. Rep. Devin Nunes, R-C.A., said, “Shocking testimony from Gregory Hicks, a top U.S. official in Libya during the September attack on our Benghazi consulate, makes it increasingly clear that the Obama administration misled the American people about the Benghazi assault.”
In fact, the witness shell game is part of a pattern. Three years ago, Gowdy revealed to Fox News that there was a massive cover-up in the deadly terrorist attack, and said the Obama administration was “dispersing” witnesses across the country by “changing names, creating aliases” of U.S. agents and witnesses.
Without the witnesses, it’s difficult to effectively wrap up the investigation — and helps Clinton avoid the controversial findings while still involved a tight presidential race.
