Russian President Vladimir Putin is usually making headlines for his actions that impact geo-politics and the balance of power in the world. From his aggressive acts in Ukraine, to his nation’s military intervention in the Syrian civil war, to his refusal to participate in President Obama’s summit on keeping nukes out of the hands of terrorists, Putin is a big-time player on the world stage.
But now, the former head of the KGB is in the news for a far different reason — one having to do with the heart more than the heavy hand of the Putin regime.

A celebrity tabloid is on top of the news that the political experts and military analysts have apparently missed — Putin’s personal relationship status. After all, it’s not like he’s known for updating his Facebook status like the rest of the world seems to do.
According to Us Weekly, the Russian president is now dating Wendi Deng, the ex-wife of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch — yes the same Murdoch who owns News Corp. and 21st Century Fox, the parent of Fox News Channel. A source told the celebrity tabloid that the ex-wife of the media mogul and the Russian president were rather “serious.”
Reports of the couple’s involvement have been circulating since their respective divorces. Of course, Putin has found himself at the center of rumors like this before.

Previously, the Russian leader was romantically linked to a Russian gymnast with whom the media reported had a child. The Kremlin has continuously denied those rumors.
While the reports of the two being a couple have made headlines throughout the world at this point, the proof of the pairing appears to be less than compelling.
The best evidence presented is the anonymous source, who Us Weekly claims is close to Putin, and the fact that Deng was spotted boarding a yacht owned by a mutual friend. Needless to say, some people are rather skeptical.

Of course, skepticism is warranted for yet another reason other than the lack of evidence. After all, being published the day before April Fool’s Day doesn’t mean it’s not a joke. The idea of running a story a day before the internationally recognized opportunity pull a colossal prank may be an effort to troll an American audience that seems to have an increasingly insatiable appetite for celebrity gossip.
However, that possibility didn’t stop the folks on Twitter from having fun with the topic.

@jwigderson RomCom plot! Imagine Mick, Jerry, Rupert, Vlad, Wendi, their entourages & kids trapped on a vacation island. A movie!

There are truly few things as American as making jokes on Twitter about celebrity couples — especially when one-half of that couple is the president of Russia.
