A Muslim who proclaimed love to Christians in his adopted city of Glasgow, Scotland, and around the world was brutally murdered Friday in revenge for his actions.
On Friday, devout Muslim and Pakistan native Asad Shah, 40, posted a message on his Facebook page that read, “Good Friday and a very Happy Easter, especially to my beloved Christian nation. Let’s follow the real footstep of beloved holy Jesus Christ and get the real success in both worlds.”
Hours later, he was dead.
Mohammad Faisal, a family friend, said a bearded Muslim entered the shop Shah operated on Friday afternoon. They spoke. Then the man stabbed Shah in the head with a knife, Faisal said.
Faisal said Shah’s brother, who was at his job next door, came in the shop to find the attacker sitting on his brother’s chest, laughing.
“The brother dragged Mr. Shah away but the guy continued attacking with the blade,” said Faisal. “They struggled up to the bus stop where Asad collapsed.” Police arrested the attacker; Shah died after being taken to a hospital.
“It was just a clear-cut revenge attack. For posting messages about peace, messages about greeting fellow Christians and Jews,” Faisal said. “That man must not have been too happy about what he was doing, what he was preaching. It was a well-planned attack. He must have been an extremist.”
Last Christmas Day, Shah posted: “Merry Christmas to all my beloved Christian nation and to all beloved mankind with best wishes.”
A vigil was held by neighborhood residents on Friday.
In a statement, organizers Nisreen Sharif and Eildon Dyer said: “As a community we are coming together to mourn his death and as a small sign of sympathy towards his family.”
