It was no secret that Donald Trump was going to do well last night. He did very well in New England in states that will not vote Republican in November even for Trump. Now the race moves to Indiana, where Ted Cruz must win. Sure, mathematically Cruz can just keep it close, but psychologically if Cruz does not win Indiana I think the race permanently shifts away from him.
The anti-Trump forces spent almost no money in last night’s races. They did not want to waste money on a region of the country that has become increasingly secular and liberal where the GOP has little chance in November, but Trump would do well. They moved quickly to Indiana.
And Indiana is where Trump can be stopped from getting to 1,237. Kasich is standing down to let Ted Cruz and Donald Trump go after each other. Indiana’s conservatives now need to stand up and join Cruz against Trump. Mike Pence now needs to publicly support Cruz and steer the Indiana GOP in Cruz’s direction.
A federal district court in New York has given some ammunition to those opposed to Trump. The fraud case against Trump University is going to proceed and start on the day the Republican National Convention starts. It raises more doubts about Trump’s ability to beat Hillary Clinton.
But it will still be a tough slog in only one week. Ted Cruz needs to camp out in Indiana and do there what he did in Iowa. Those who oppose Trump and are on the sidelines need to get onboard the Cruz ship now.
