When Target made a move to make sure that customers and employees could use whatever bathroom they wanted, no matter what their gender, the company probably thought it was striking a blow for “tolerance.”
Instead of dealing a blow to intolerance, though, the only thing that’s going to take a blow is its bottom line: Over 480,000 people have signed a petition saying that they’ll boycott Target over the new policy.
The American Family Association, which organized the petition drive, claims that the retail giant’s “policy is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims.”
“This means a man can simply say he ‘feels like a woman today’ and enter the women’s restroom…even if young girls or women are already in there,” the AFA’s petition read.

The harsh picture the petition paints is a far cry from the hopey-changey statement the retail chain issued on its website last week.
“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate,” it read. “We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”
“(W)e welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity … Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”
This quickly led to the #BoycottTarget hashtag on Twitter and a severe case of backlash.
“Target’s policy is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims,” the AFA’s petition reads. “And with Target publicly boasting that men can enter women’s bathrooms, where do you think predators are going to go?
“Clearly, Target’s dangerous new policy
poses a danger to wives and daughters. We think many customers will
agree. And we think the average Target customer is willing to pledge to
boycott Target stores until it makes protecting women and children a
priority.”
The petition also calls for the retail
giant to institute private unisex bathrooms for transgender people or
those who wish to use the bathroom alone
Almost half-a-million people have pledged to stay away, and there’s good reason why. We’ve chronicled a number of cases where sexual predators
have used such tactics to stalk their prey. Americans have every right
to be skeptical. This isn’t about inclusion — it’s about the danger such
policies pose. If Target doesn’t get that, they’re going to lose a lot
of business.
