Should it come as a surprise that a few days before Mitt Romney is scheduled to visit Jerusalem, Obama signs
a strengthened U.S.-Israel security bill and releases seventy million
dollars to Israel touting America’s “unshakeable commitment”? The money
is allegedly to help expand Israel’s short-range missile defense system,
but I can’t help but wonder about the timing here.
Romney doesn’t have access to Federal funds. He can’t campaign on the
taxpayer’s dime. It’s like Obama sent Israel an expensive
(taxpayer-funded) gift with a note that said, “Don’t forget how much you
love me while Romney’s there wooing you. Hugs and Kisses, Barack.”
Romney has criticized Obama of late because he has not been decisive in recognizing Jerusalem as the new capital of Israel, among other things. Romney has made it clear that he fully supports Israel, as do most conservatives… and apparently liberals too.
It’s strange to find an area where both parties are willing to agree publically. What’s the deal with Israel? Why do we court her so? Our relationship with her has been enormously costly and fraught with drama (I almost feel like I am talking about a real woman here…).
The modern nation of Israel was created by the UN in 1948. Ever since then (like the day after), every Arab nation on the Sinai peninsula and beyond has vowed Israel’s destruction. It may have been the blindest, most short-sighted mistake One-World-Government cartographers made that century (and there were some doozies). Those Muslims who were displaced from their homes in 1948 were, and still are, the angriest of the whole group. They were never naturalized back into their former countries of origin and they’ve been roving the countryside committing acts of terror ever since.
But creating a short-range missile defense system will not protect Israel from car bombs and IEDs. It is meant to protect her from a full-scale national attack.
It’s possible that Obama signed this bill and released these funds not just because he wants to make himself look good in the current presidential campaign, but, more importantly, because he knows something we don’t yet know: Iran will be getting nuclear weapons. If this is the case, things in the Middle East are going to get even more complicated.
It may be that we’re on the verge of a severe test of our international hegemony. And we’ll probably run out of money long before our politicians realize how fundamentally flawed our Middle East policy is. Who helped start Iran’s nuclear program in the first place? Oh yeah, we did. Atoms for Peace anyone? And who installed Hussein in Iraq? When are we gonna learn to just mind our own business? We’ll have to sooner or later. ’Cause when we’re too weak to play hero anymore and some other countries get strong enough to want to take a crack at us, do you think Israel will stick around? Naw. By that time, she’ll have done R-U-N-N-O-F-T.
