The Pope turns down lunch with John Boehner and Nancy Pelosi
via response action
Pope Francis made his first visit to the United States, addressing Congress, meeting the President, seeing the sights. And while we profoundly disagree with Francis on economic policy, and a host of other issues, we admire and support his decision to turn down a power lunch with congressional big-wigs and instead, minister to the homeless in Washington, DC:
Passing on the opportunity to dine with politicians after addressing Congress this morning, Francis instead said a prayer blessing a meal for homeless clients of St. Maria's Meals, a food program run by Catholic Charities in Washington, D.C.
Just before the meal, Francis drew a powerful comparison between the plight of the homeless and the Christmas story about Jesus’ birth in a stable.
“The son of God knew what it was to be a homeless person,” Francis said, during a speech at nearby St. Patrick's Catholic Church. “What it was to start life without a roof over his head.”

“I want to be very clear. We can’t find any social or moral justification,  no justification whatsoever for lack of housing,” he continued. “We know that Jesus wanted to show solidarity with every person. He wanted everyone to experience his companionship, his help and his love. He identified with all those who suffer, who weep, who suffer any kind of injustice. He tells us this clearly, ‘I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.’"
Here is an instance of a man of faith living that faith -- attending to the physical and spiritual needs of the poor. And doing it all without the government's interference, permission or sanction.
Churches and church members of all denominations are among the largest providers of charity in the world. They give and serve because their faith asks it of them. There are many on the Left who disparage these efforts, saying government -- not private individuals and organizations -- should be aiding the poor, housing the homeless, and feeding the hungry.

All that does is feed, house, and clothe bureaucrats.
And the Left has also gone to great political and legal lengths to punish people of faith for doing good works, or living their faith. The Obama administration, for example, is fighting Catholic nuns to court to force them to provide birth control and abortion services to their non-religious employees.
Again -- we think the Pope is wrong on free markets. The free market is the most effective tool for advancing humanity, and bettering lives across the globe.
But we also salute him for his dedication to living his faith, providing hope to those who have none, and comforting those who are suffering.
