It wasn’t that long ago — only a few months — when President Obama was roundly criticized after being caught on camera chewing gum during the D-Day ceremonies in France as Queen Elizabeth II was introduced.

The words “shameful” and “vulgar” were thrown around as social media networks lit up with outrage at Mr. Obama’s display.
“Obama do you want a Coke too while chewing gum while the Marseillaise is being played?” one tweet fumed, in reference to the president’s lack of respect for the French National anthem.

So one might think the president would be a little more careful about the international image he projects for the United States when appearing among world leaders at a highly publicized event. One might think….
As USA Today reports, Obama has done it again — caused an uproar and offended his host nation with his very public gum-chewing:

Ahead of an economic summit in Beijing, billed as the biggest international event in the Chinese capital since the 2008 Summer Olympic Games…Obama emerged from his car chewing gum; he’s a well-known user of Nicorette, the smoking-cessation gum.
But Chinese Internet users, accustomed to the highly formal standards of their stiff party leadership, quickly characterized the leader of the world’s most powerful nation as an impolite “idler,” or careless “rapper.”
