Since the 9/11 terrorist attack of 2001, its anniversary has evoked both sorrow and fear in the hearts of Americans.
While remembering the thousands killed in the execution of that savage plot, the threat that radicals could mark Sept. 11 with another attack has been a recurring concern. Those fears were realized two years ago when a terrorist strike on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya left four Americans dead.
If retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney is right, the upcoming 13th anniversary of 9/11 could pose an even greater risk to Americans.
In a recent Fox News appearance, he noted that military leaders see the threat much differently than Barack Obama. “The president thinks everything’s OK,” McInerney said, celebrating the fact that “al Qaeda’s dead and he killed Osama bin Laden.”
In reality, however, he asserted that Obama’s narrative is “three years behind.”
As it stands, military experts – including Secretary of State John Kerry – are pleading with Obama to take decisive action regarding the threat that terrorist organization Islamic State, or ISIS, poses in Iraq, Syria, and beyond. “ISIS unchecked is an existential threat to the United States,” he said, “and soon. I’m not talking two or three years from now. I’m talking very, very soon.”
In order to counter that threat, McInerney suggested taking “very aggressive corrective action,” including “hitting 200 targets a day” in order to neutralize the terrorist network’s ability to stage attacks. Insisting the U.S. should increase its terror threat level ahead of Sept. 11, he noted that there are a number of ways ISIS could wreak havoc within the U.S.
He then alluded to an upcoming book from “a major news network and publishing network” that he said will offer an “earth-shattering” look at the immediate danger posed by these Islamic militants. “The fact is we may even see a 9/11/14 MH-370 resurface again,” he said. “We should go to DEFCON 1, our highest state of readiness and be prepared as we lead up to 9/11.”
He has previously suggested that the commercial airliner that disappeared in March could have safely landed in Pakistan, where it sits ready to be used by terrorists for a potential attack.
