One of my pet peeves has always been how those in our pop culture seem to enjoy comparing themselves to warriors, or their profession to war. It seems to be the go to move of athletes, coaches, musicians and actors. I understand the intention is not to defame or minimize what our soldiers are doing or to minimize the difficulties of war and battle. The purpose is to show just how hard these people have had to work or how difficult certain tasks were… but there is no comparison. Anything that is not warfare cannot be compared to warfare – it’s simply ridiculous.
So, like many Americans I was aghast when I heard that Tom Cruise implied that what he did on a daily basis was as difficult as being involved in combat.
Tom Cruise not only thinks he trains harder than Olympic athletes, he believes his job as a professional actor is as grueling as fighting the war in Afghanistan -- this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ.
First, the Middle East -- Tom says his location shoots are just like serving a tour in Afghanistan, "That's what it feels like. And certainly on this last movie, it was brutal. It was brutal."
Cue Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg is also a superstar and has made a fortune first as music icon Marky Mark, and more recently as a celebrated actor. His latest film, Lone Survivor, is about the harrowing journey of Seal Team 10’s doomed “Operation Red Wings” mission. In the movie Wahlberg plays a Navy Seal trying to survive in the most terrible of circumstances, and one question he received at the premiere of the movie set off some fireworks. (Warning – the Language used is not family friendly)
For actors who sit there and talk about, "Oh, I went to SEAL training"? I don't give a f-ck what you did. You don't know what these guys did. For somebody go sit there and say my job was as difficult as being in the military? How f-cking dare you, while you sit in a makeup chair for two hours.
...I don't give a sh-t if you get your ass busted. You get to go home at the end of the day. You get to go to your hotel room. You get to order your f-cking chicken. Whatever the f-ck it is.
When Wahlberg finished he apologized for "losing his sh-t" in front of everybody, but he did not apologize for standing up for Navy SEALS. He said simply, "Don't ask me anymore questions tonight."
Thank you for putting things into perspective, Mr. Wahlberg. Our soldiers risk everything to serve our nation; let’s not make light of their sacrifice by trying to pretend the mundane things we do in our daily lives are anything like what they deal with.
By the way, Mark Wahlberg’s new movie Lone Survivor looks terrific, make sure you get out and see it when it reaches your local theater in early January 2014.
