A question and answer session on New York’s new gun law took place last
week with residents of Erie County, New York. Officials were on hand to
“appear” to answer questions about the new NY Safe Act. However, it
wasn’t long until it was apparent that they were not interested in
hearing from the citizens. The meeting filled the small venue and there
were people standing in the hall to hear what was being said. Even
from the start of the meeting, it was apparent that the people were
determined to be heard and their “non-compliance resistance” to the new
law was evident. Trust me, you will want to watch this entire video
segment!
Immediately following the first speaker, a second was introduced, but
before he could get a word in one audience member asked that they
recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States. When
the speaker seemed unmoved by it, they began standing and reciting the
pledge and the speaker finally joined in with them.
The crowd of people demanded transparency even as the State officials
attempted to corral the media for private interviews. The State
further persisted to keep questions brought forth by individuals private
and not speak into the microphone so that all could hear the answers.
The questions covered non-compliance, penalties, jury nullification,
2nd Amendment profiling into domestic terrorists, government tyranny,
police, sheriff, and more.
One of the questions posed to a policeman at the meeting was what his
allegiance was to. When he responded “I took an oath to protect the
people of the State of New York,” he was quickly corrected and asked,
“what about the Constitution?”
This is extremely troubling to see so many take an oath and forgetting what their oath is. Policemen are not sworn to protect the people but
to uphold the law and enforce it, particularly the Constitution of the
United States and their State Constitutions.
Frustration was apparent. As WKBW
reported,
One WNYer even said “You put a brown shirt on Mr. Cuomo and put him on television, he would look just like Hitler.”
Another chimed in, “Angry people get together, they form militias
folks. This country, this WNY is prime for something like that!”
Western New York gun owners say they SAFE Act and its ban on assault weapons makes no sense.
One of the big concerns — who is footing the bill for making changes
to guns that are now considered assault weapons. State officials told
the crowd the gun owners are the ones responsible.
People in the crowd also had a lot of questions about the
registration laws. One gun owner asked,”What is the penalty if you don’t
register it? ‘Cause I guarantee there’s a lot of people that aren’t
going to.”
At times, advocates felt answers were incomplete or political.
The entire issue centers around gun registration. You might recall
that this is one of the things Adolph Hitler did prior to going after
guns. The Act would better be titled the Treason Act, rather than the
SAFE Act.
Michael Green, with the Division of Criminal Justice Services
explained, “Any pump, lever or bolt action shotgun or rifle can’t be an
assault weapon by definition and does not need to be registered.”
Other State officials claim that the SAFE Act will prevent another
Aurora, Sandy Hook or Webster, while it protects Second Amendment
rights. It does no such thing nor can they prove it will.
These officials also said they would be tracking ammunition sales,
“So that folks in Aurora, Colorado don’t come up with six thousand
rounds of ammunition.”
Sounds like a clear violation of the Second Amendment. By the way,
did the alleged shooter in Aurora fire 6,000 rounds? Seems like it was
quite a bit less than that. Let’s encourage these “officials” to deal
in reality, not emotionally driven arguments like how many bullets a
person can own or what types of weapons.
Many in the audience say the issues surrounding some of these
shootings have much more to do with society being desensitized by
violence more than it does any weapon. I agree with them.
