A 72-year-old woman who found herself facing an unusual number of copperhead snakes had a unique but effective way to deal with
the snakes when she happened to run out of ammunition for her 20-gauge shotgun.
The woman, identified only as Mrs. Newby, killed more than a dozen
copperhead snakes with a shovel at her home near Kinta, Oklahoma.
Family members
told KOTV that Newby killed 11 snakes one night, and four more the next night.
Newby’s family also said her weapon of choice was a 20-gauge shotgun,
and when she runs out of shells, her next choice is a shovel.
Family members said the grandmother believed there was a den of vipers under her old house trailer.
That’s about the time I’d be calling in an expert to rid
my property of any and everything that slithers across land.
Mrs Newby killed 11 copperheads last night at her house ! She's a snake killer if you need help call her ! She is 72 years old
Last month, the family said Mrs. Newby killed a five-foot-six-inch western diamondback rattlesnake.
Copperhead snakes are nothing to mess around with. While their bites
are not typically fatal to humans, they should be avoided because they
are quite painful and can result in temporary tissue damage in the bite
area, according to Live Science. However, anyone who gets bit by a copperhead should always seek medical attention.
Copperhead snakes, which get their name from their color, don’t
generally give any type of warning before they strike, which makes them
even more dangerous.
Western diamondback
rattlesnakes are a different story. This species causes more fatalities
than any other snake in the United States, according to Animal Diversity Web.
As summer is in full swing, let this story serve as a reminder to watch your step while taking part in outdoor activities.
