HEALTH ALERT: Contaminated Wastewater Released by EPA into Colorado River Reaches New Mexico, Inches Towards Utah
Via LibertyNEWS
Friday, LibertyNEWS reported on the Environmental Protection Agency ‘accidentally’ releasing 1 million gallons of arsenic contaminated wastewater into Colorado’s Animas River. While many readers expressed disbelief as this story had yet to make national headlines, the evidence that incident did in fact occur is no longer something that can be ignored.
For those just who missed the initial report, here is a brief recap:
The incident occurred while an EPA crew was investigating reports of several small leaks draining the decommissioned Gold King Mine in the Durango area. While using heavy machinery at the mine, the EPA team triggered the release of one million gallons of wastewater contaminated with heavy metals such as zinc, iron, and copper.
At the time, officials had warned residents to cut back on water usage while the environmental impact was investigated and additionally ordering the agricultural community to stop using water from the river all together.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Joe Lewandowski stated that  “There’s nothing that can be done to stop the flow of the river… We can only wait until the flows slow down.” Adding that until the EPA determined the river’s metal levels had returned to normal, recreational areas would also remain closed.
