Donald Trump – a Mainstream Democrat Masquerading in the GOP

Sigh.
I will never understand the affection that some of my GOP friends have for wealthy businessman-come-politician Donald Trump. I have said it before and I will apparently be forced to say it again – Donald Trump is a Terrible Republican. He proved it again in an appearance with Megyn Kelly on Fox News Thursday afternoon.
Kelly got straight to the point zeroing in on two recent incidents that demonstrate that the Donald is no conservative.
The first was about free speech. After the recent incident in Garland, Texas and the ruckus surrounding the Mohammed Drawing Contest, Trump derided Pamela Geller for hosting such a controversial event.

Trump Boss Brings Up Jimmy Saville with Beeb while Guardian Journalist ...

KELLY: Let’s talk about free speech because after that Pam Geller event down in Garland, Texas, where they were attacked and the two would-be Jihadi’s were shot dead by the police force, you also sent out some tweets saying why taunt in order to provoke possible death? Dumb in that moment.
TRUMP: I think Pam Geller is a terrible messenger. I think she’s terrible. We have enough problems without taunting and driving everybody crazy.
KELLY: But my question to you is, because this turned into a bigger thing, like what do we stand for as Americans if not for freedom of speech, ability to express yourself, this speech in particular which was in defiance, it’s like the cartoon that won the contest it had Muhammad standing there saying you can’t draw me and the person looking up to him saying, that’s why I draw you. It was about people trying to shut down an American ideal and this group, however unsympathetic they may have been, saying, we reject that attempt.

TRUMP: They were totally unsympathetic. Now, you look at Muhammad and you look at some of the positions they have Muhammad and some people are going to get extremely upset about it. Now, I’m not the only one and I’m not the only Conservative Republican that feels this way. They’re lucky to be alive. Why with all the problems we have, why taunt?

Look, you may feel like the Mohammed cartoon event was unwise and that there are better ways to fight for free speech. But Pamela Geller doesn’t… and that is the whole point of her demonstration. Geller believes that Islam and Sharia Law present the gravest threats to free speech that the West has faced in over 50 years. Her decision to hold a “draw Mohammed” contest proved to be the perfect tool for debating free speech because two Muslim men attacked the event, then liberals seemingly sided with them and against Geller!

Kelly also brought up a pair of Trump tweets that came on the heels of the terrible Amtrak train crash. After the crash Trump was quick to tweet that America has infrastructure issues… issues he would fix by spending more of our money.

There was also this tasteless tweet – which Trump quickly deleted. (But the internet is forever.)

Trump being the solidly liberal “Republican” that he is believes that the best way to solve our infrastructure problem is to spend American tax dollars in doing so. Instead of discussing how we should reform the way we spend our infrastructure money, Trump’s plan is to spend more money on it. Ostensibly, he would spend less on overseas spending (great) while increasing spending here at home (not so great).

Our infrastructure issues are not an outgrowth of a spending problem – they are directly related to a bureaucracy problem. The way to fix our bridges and roads that have become dilapidated is by removing federal oversight to such issues and returning control to those things to states and localities. Let local governments spend infrastructure dollars to fix problem areas instead of expecting the “all seeing eyes” in Washington, D.C. to figure out how to best spend those dollars in places as far flung as Wasilla, Alaska and Tampa, Florida.
Face it, folks, while Donald Trump may make a good attack dog every now and again (when he’s focused on Obama and Hillary), he almost never mutters a conservative answer to a political question.
