Well, this is awkward. It looks like Barack Obama appointed a former Communist to the head of the CIA:
At his first polygraph test to enter the CIA, the future director had a secret.John Brennan on Thursday recalled being asked a standard question for a top security clearance at his early CIA lie detector test: Have you ever worked with or for a group that was dedicated to overthrowing the US?"
I froze," Brennan said during a panel discussion about diversity in the intelligence community at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual conference. "This was back in 1980, and I thought back to a previous election where I voted, and I voted for the Communist Party candidate,"
Brennan was responding to a question about barriers to recruiting diverse candidates for the intelligence fields, including whether past records of activism could hurt someone applying for a clearance later in life. This isn't some dumb youthful throwaway vote. At the time, Brennan was twenty five years old, had a Bachelor's from Fordham, and had studied abroad in Cairo. The man received an M.A. in government that same year from the University of Texas, and presumably had a grasp of the global political landscape. Yet at the height of the Cold War, he still cast a vote for the Communist Party.
Lest you look at Occupy Generation and assume this is just the same as voting for Bernie Sanders, consider this: records indicate that during the Cold War, the American Communist Party was acting in concert with the Soviet Union. The Venona Cables indicate that the worst fears of Joseph McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover were extremely well founded. The organization was subsidized, into the millions of dollars, by the Soviet government. Its entire existence was a Kremlin sabotage operation meant to undermine our stability- think Radio Free America, but with shows about the joys of the gulag and the pleasures of standing in bread lines.
Credit where it's due: back in 2014, Senator Rand Paul slammed the appointment of Brennan as CIA chief's confirmation after it was revealed that Brennan explicitly lied about the CIA spying on a Senate subcommittee as it investigated torture. Paul also engaged in a 13 hour filibuster of Brennan's nomination that questioned Brennan's total disregard for the due process rights of Americans. That Brennan engaged in the sort of behavior that's more associated with the KGB than the Constitution should no longer come as a surprise.
